Diversification of Rural Livelihood

Diversification means moving part of rural income away from crop farming into allied and non farm activities. It matters for two reasons: crop farming alone cannot absorb the whole rural workforce, and depending on a single rain fed crop makes household income dangerously unstable.

Allied Activities

  • Animal husbandry, especially dairy, gives regular income through the year rather than at harvest only.
  • Operation Flood organised milk producers into cooperatives that collected, processed and marketed milk, raising producer incomes.
  • Poultry, goat rearing and piggery need little land, so they suit landless and marginal households.
  • Fisheries include inland fishing in rivers, ponds and tanks, and marine fishing along the coast.
  • Fishing communities face problems of low income, overfishing and lack of storage and transport.
  • Horticulture, that is fruits, vegetables, flowers and spices, gives higher income per hectare than cereals and creates work for women.

Non Farm Employment and New Directions

  • Agro processing such as flour milling, oil extraction and food packing adds value close to the farm.
  • Cottage and village industry, handloom, handicraft and khadi provide work in the lean season.
  • Transport, repair, retail trade and construction absorb a growing share of rural workers.
  • Information technology in rural areas helps with weather advice, market prices and land records.
  • Organic farming avoids chemical fertiliser and pesticide, uses compost and crop rotation, and fetches a better price where a market exists.
  • Its limits are lower yield in early years, the need for certification and a small but growing market.
  • Rural infrastructure such as roads, power and cold storage decides how far diversification can actually go.
  • Training, market linkage and credit are needed together for a household to shift into a new activity.

Exam me kaise aata hai

  • Operation Flood is related to — milk and dairy cooperatives
  • Fruits, vegetables and flowers together form — horticulture
  • Farming without chemical fertiliser and pesticide is — organic farming
  • Which allied activity suits landless households best — poultry and goat rearing

UPSC/State PSC ke liye

  • Dairy cooperatives succeeded because they linked the producer directly to the consumer market and removed the middleman's margin.
  • Diversification reduces income risk rather than raising average income by itself, which is why it matters most to small and marginal households.
